Myocarditis Following Immunization With mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines in Members of the US Military

A retrospective case series studied members of the US Military diagnosed with myocarditis following COVID-19 vaccination from January through April 2021. Patients reported chest pain, sought care the US Military Health System and were diagnosed with clinical myocarditis.

Twenty three male patients, 22 actively serving/1 retiree, all in good health and physically fit, presented with acute chest pain within 4 days after receiving mRNA COVID-19 vaccine. A total of 20 Service Members experienced symptoms after receiving the second dose administered in an appropriately spaced 2-dose series.

During the period between January and April 2021, the military administered more than 2.8 million doses of mRNA COVID-19 vaccine and this number was higher than expected after a second vaccine dose.
