From the report from the Public Health England (PHE) on August 20, 2021 report SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and variants under investigation in England, Technical briefing 21:

Variant surveillance

  • No new variants of concern
  • Proportion of cases sequenced/genotyped remains relatively low but has started to recover as case numbers fall and capacity expands
  • Priority for sequencing:
    • hospitalised cases and hospital staff
    • cases among international travellers
    • national core priority studies
    • as near random a sample as possible from each region, to the maximum coverage allowed by laboratory capacity

Infection/Reinfection rates

  • 5.2 million first infections
  • 35,124 possible reinfections 

Confirmed Delta Cases dropped in the unvaccinated, now occurring in less than 43%! 

  • Delta confirmed/provisional cases by vaccination status Feb 2021-Aug 2021 (pg. 22)
    • 386,735 all ages
    • 183,133 unvaccinated

Delta Death Rate increasing in Vaxed now at 65.85% 

  • Deaths (all ages) within 28 days confirmed/provisional Delta cases by vaccination status Feb 2021-Aug 2021 (pg. 23)
    • Total Deaths 1,189
    • All Vaccinated 783 dead
      • (at least one dose) 104 dead
      • (> 14 days post Dose #2) 679 dead 
    • Unvaccinated 390 dead
