Excerpted From the Public Health England (PHE) on September 3, 2021 report SARS-CoV-2 variants of concern and variants under investigation in England, Technical briefing 22:

Variant surveillance with no changes

  • No new variants of concern
  • Proportion of cases sequenced/genotyped remains relatively low but has started to recover as case numbers fall and capacity expands
  • Priority for sequencing:
    • hospitalised cases and hospital staff
    • cases among international travelers
    • national core priority studies
    • as near random a sample as possible from each region, to the maximum coverage allowed by laboratory capacity

Per Section 1.3 VOC and VUI case numbers, proportion and deaths on page 12 concludes, “Analysis indicates that the proportion of Delta cases who present to emergency care is greater than that of Alpha, but a more detailed analysis of 43,338 COVID-19 cases indicates that the risk of hospitalisation among Delta cases is 2.26 times greater compared to Alpha. 

Confirmed Delta Cases slight increase in unvaccinated, now in 44% 

  • Delta confirmed/provisional cases by vaccination status Feb 2021-Aug 2021 (pg. 21)
    • 492,528 all ages
    • 219,716 unvaccinated

Delta Death Rate still increasing in Vaxed now at 68.57% 

  • Deaths (all ages) within 28 days confirmed/provisional Delta cases by vaccination status Feb 2021-Aug 2021 (pg. 22)
    • Total Deaths 1,798
    • All Vaccinated 783 dead
      • (at least one dose) 142 dead
      • (> 14 days post Dose #2) 1,091 dead 
    • Unvaccinated 536 dead
